Significant operational improvements at the shipyard resulted in the approval to build a second destroyer this fiscal year.
The Pentagon has approved the production of a second Arleigh Burke-class destroyer for the U.S. Navy for the 2027 fiscal year. If funding is approved by Congress, the new destroyer would be constructed at General Dynamics Bath Iron Works in Maine.
“After a rigorous review, Bath Iron Works has proven it has the capacity and stability to support construction of a second destroyer,” Deputy Defense Secretary Steve Feinberg stated. “While the operational improvements we have seen at BIW are a significant step in the right direction, the shipyard must continue this momentum to fully resolve legacy production challenges — sustained performance is essential.”
Senator Susan Collins has promoted the project, stating, “I have advocated for a second destroyer to be included in this year’s budget, and I worked with the administration during its careful review and repeated visits to BIW to verify the ability of the shipyard to construct another ship while continuing to complete its current workload. This certification will help keep our Navy strong and support BIW as a steady source of good-paying Maine jobs.”
The House and Senate passed a continuing resolution to fund the government through early December. The destroyer’s production must be authorized through appropriations legislation for fiscal year 2027.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Senator Collins as she promotes appropriations legislation to produce the second destroyer.
- For officials in the Pentagon as they oversee the construction of necessary equipment to protect the country.
- For discernment for members of Congress as they consider appropriations bills for fiscal year 2027.
